GST RecordKeeper 1.02
.
About GST RecordKeeper 1.02 GST RecordKeeper an application designed especially for Barristers to record their practice and personal finances. It has been created primarily in response to the increased burden on all barristers to maintain up-to-date records to meet the new GST reporting requirements. It is far simpler to use (and far less expensive) than Quicken, MYOB and probably all other accounting packages you have tried. It complements your Clerk's accounts department instead of duplicating it. It does not assume or require any knowledge of accounting principles. It has everything you need to manage your GST related financial obligations and more. No double entry accounting, no journals, no reconciliations!
GST RecordKeeper is suitable for any service-industry business, although this version has been tailored especially for barristers.
The program was created by Sean Hardy, Barrister at the Victorian Bar.

Upgrades

GST RecordKeeper costs $125.00.
The demo version will eventually expire unless a registration code is entered. Registration codes can be purchased by sending a cheque for $125.00 to Sean P. Hardy, c/- Clerk R, Owen Dixon Chambers, 205 William Street, Melbourne 3000, or DX 91 Melbourne. Registered users can get technical support from S. P. Hardy via phone and email. Click the "Register" button within the program for full details on how to register.
Support
You can ask questions, report problems, make feature requests and send all feed-back about the software, about the ftp site and this site by email to Sean Hardy.
Features requested by users have been and continue to be incorporated in the program. So far, no barrister has suggested the program should have bank reconciliations. This is not surprising. Although most barristers have heard of bank reconciliations, not many have ever seen one, nor do they want to. This program is designed to replace the "shoe-box" style accounting systems many sole-trading businesses use. It is not designed to be a fully-featured accounting program.
Please ensure that you make regular back-ups of your GST Recordkeeper files so as to avoid the anguish of data loss when your system inevitably crashes and/or viruses corrupt your data.

About Bank Reconciliations
The Corporations Law requires companies to maintain accounting records to a standard that necessitates bank reconciliations. Most accountants say that bank reconciliations are necessary for most businesses to maintain proper accounting records. Many accountants advise that sole-practitioner businesses, such as barristers, do not need bank reconciliations. This is because many sole-practitioners are not corporations, and business expenses often do not get paid solely from a business account but there is often a blurr between private and business record keeping.
A bank reconciliation is the act of matching every income and expense record to a business bank account entry and thus proving that the business accounts do not contain errors.
For barristers who do not constrain their practice income and expenditure to a single bank account, the cost of performing bank reconciliations is usually greater than any real or perceived benefit.
GST RecordKeeper does not require you to do bank reconciliations, and does not have any double-entry accounting features at all. This is what makes it relatively simple to use. Some barristers who wish to do bank reconciliations have chosen to maintain a set of accounts in a program such as Quicken or MYOB, but continue to do all their GST related accounting in GST RecordKeeper because of its ease of use and flexibility.
